The Psychological Difference. Engraved on March 06, 2010 by Michael Dick

We can all agree that when it comes to great design, Apple is held close to the top by all of us. But, we also know that no one is perfect and that they even have flaws in their UI's. One of them being inconsistent with the meaning of Save & Done when interacting with data.

Which button?

When used separately, Save & Done have the same effect physiologically to a user; they both represent an action to process once you are finished inputing data.

When used together you're telling them two different things.

Save is a permanent action that can not be undone Much like how our computers work; there's no going back. Done can have the same effect, except when used in conjunction with Save, it becomes a less permanent action.

iPhone Contacts app

Let's use the Contacts app on the iPhone as an example. When you create a contact and tap on the name field, you're able to punch in your name. Here, you use Saveaction when you're 'done' with your name. Save is such a permanent action that most times I make a mistake myself and think I've finalized the contact and hit the home button. It's not until you punch Done that you finalize your contact and "save" it.

The way you word your actions is highly important in UI design. Be careful what you're telling your users.
